With a massive storm predicted with wind speeds of 80-100km/h a few of us decided a down wind paddle across botany bay was in order. Unfortunatley for us the storm didn’t hit until well after dark.

The storm hit with so much force we were glad we were not out on the water. The Sailing club we were having dinner at ended up flooding, the roof caved in & the windows were bowing under the pressure of the wind spraying water all over us.

Trying to drive through this storm was hard enough as all the roads were flooded, but we were still let down we never made it for a paddle, so as we drove through knee deep water, I decided that we couldn’t go home without at least a little paddle. So we grabbed the boards off the roof and paddled down the main road (Taren Point Road), much to the delight of many motorists.

The clip and photos went viral and was shared countless times on social media, plus featured on national news and talk back radio. Most of the comments were positive but many comments had us cracking up. There were a few comments about how dangerous it was as we could have got sucked down drains, got hit by cars, or us having no respect for the emergency services that were out in the storm.

Well let me clear a few things up: The water was about 8″ deep where we were paddling. I know this because my 10″ fin is now grinded down to 8″ from rubbing along the road and stepping off the board the water was around our ankles. The cars were going slow so we could see them from a mile off and we were also in the curb side lane and the traffic was in the medium lane. And as for not having respect for emergency services, well we just saw an opportunity and had fun. We were only there for a few minutes and no one was in danger. So PLEASE, get over it, it was just a bit of fun. In life you have to make the most out of every opportunity, and we did just that.
